Pilling
Pilling occurs when short fibres in wool fabric tangle together due to friction, forming small bobbles or “pills” on the surface. It’s a natural process and does not mean the fabric is of poor quality, but you can minimize it to keep the factory condition of your garment longer.
To minimize pilling:
- Use a gentle cycle or hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent.
- When washing the garments, turn them inside out to reduce friction.
- Use a Laundry Bag. A mesh laundry bag helps minimize agitation in the wash.
- Avoid Fabric Softeners. They can weaken fibres and increase friction.
- Limit Friction. Wearing wool garments under harsh lined coats, backpacks, harsh bag straps can accelerate pilling. Choose smoother linings.
To remove pills:
- Pick off pills carefully by hand to avoid damaging the fibres.
- Use fabric shaver. A battery-operated fabric shaver can quickly remove pills without damaging the garment.
- Gently comb away pills with a wool comb or sweater stone
